Ink rethink - Item from a magazine. Feb. 2004

If inkjet printer prices seem too good to be true, That's because they are - they're sold at razor thin margins because the manufacturers know the real profit is in consumables like ink cartridges. But there are ways you can help tilt the odds in you favour.

Print less: No, really. If that Web site print out is going to end up buried on your desktop why not just save it to your hard disk until you really need it?

Lose the colour: Colour cartridges cost more that black cartridges, and you typically have to replace them even if only one of the primary colours is empty.
If it doesn't have to be in colour: use the printer driver (the Printer Setup option in the File menu, in most Windows programs) to output greyscale instead.

Rough it: The better the print quality, the more ink you use, Unless you're handing the printout to your boss, you might want to knock the quality down a notch. As a bonus, it'll also print faster.
